Mosley was a stray, and thankfully we had a foster step up for him. He went to an adopter in Rhode Island and it started out well, but something ended up not clicking for them and we took him back. He had a long expensive flight but our foster, who was by then living in Washington, took him for a few weeks before we could get him into another foster home. Both foster homes did a great job getting him settled down and ready to be adopted again. He has some hearing and vision deficit, but it isn’t bad like some we see. His name was Banner when we took him back and we re-named him Phantom. Then a wonderful couple adopted him in Washington. They understood his quirks and were willing to work with him and us.
Here is the latest update on him:
Hi Janeen, just a quick little brag about our beautiful Mosley. It’s been a little over 10 months and he his making great strides. Did great during our very busy blueberry season, which lasts 2 months. He has become much more trusting of us. When he meets people he looks to me for direction. Today we had a few friends over to make cider, and he did just wonderful. I have a whole procedure when Mosley meets a new person. We introduce outside. Althea goes out first as she adores people. Mosley watches her wagging and getting LOVES through the glass door. He then starts wagging, then I take him leashed to greet the new person. He sniffs and becomes acquainted. When his body language shows me he is at ease, I let him off leash. I am very careful about how I do this, because I want to set him up for success. Today he showed no insecurity or unease. He was inquisitive, friendly, playful, and making the rounds for rump scratches. I am so very happy that he trusts us enough to feel secure here. Several months ago he learned that if he does feel uncomfortable about a person that he can go to his bed and be secure there. That is exactly what I had hoped for, and he doesn’t have to be a social butterfly. We are generally not very social, but a few friends/family that we interact with. I am just so darn proud of him, we have worked hard to write this new story, and it was so good to see him happy and comfortable interacting. Today was a success, thought I’d share.
Sometimes, no matter how hard we try to match a dog to a home, it doesn’t work out as life changes for the adopters or the dog ages. This boy now has a confident, mellow dog friend that he trusts, which helps a great deal. Dogs can have more than one chance at a new start. We appreciated that the first adopter contacted us and asked us to take him back. If for some reason it isn’t a match, we just need time to work on finding the right spot. Looks like Banner/Phantom/Mosley (so many names!) is growing and settling in nicely.
