Fancy was a stray pregnant female that chose to whelp under someone’s deck/porch in California, and a neighbor was asked to help get her out. He did so, not knowing how she would behave to a stranger crawling into her space with new puppies. She did fine and was fostered by that good Samaritan until we found homes for her and all her puppies.
Marjorie fell in love with Fancy, adopted her, and started the process of teaching miss Fancy how wonderful it is to be within parameters that are safe. Freedom isn’t freedom if it costs a dog her life, after all. Below is the first update we received from her new Mom:
Lean is good and with Janeen’s help I have been able to get Fancy in good shape by measuring her food ( Taste of the Wild Praire ) and hand feeding her twice a day and that really really helps a new dog to bond with you and correct any unwanted feeding habits. Fancy is a healthy 42 lbs now.
I want to share some ideas of Janeen’s that have really helped me in the transition of having a new dog in the house. “Remember that it takes a year or longer for a new dog to really be ours” and this has helped me relax and take it easy. I have no time frame when things have to get done and only this last month have I seen a real progress for Fancy and me. Her anxiety has dropped and as she is more relaxed she is accepting the crate, accepting she doesn’t need to get hysterical when I leave. Her emotional highs and lows are leveling out and this is making everything fall into place. It will be super in a year ya ya!
The other idea that always stays with me is that “remember the new dog has to fit into our lives ” so don’t give into things that later will be harder to correct.
Fancy now can be trusted more, and she is is a very sweet wonderful cuddly companion. She has a fur friend in her home, a pointer named Jaeger, and they get along very well.
